Worker profile: “Lupita Perz”
This profile is about Lupita Perez. She is a bus operator and she is thirty eight years old. She has been doing this job for three years. She used to work at an elementary school as a teacher’s assistant. She liked the job, but the money was not enough for her to take care of her family finances as a single mother. She stared looking for a part time job for the summer. One of her neighbors told her that the authority is hiring for part time, and that’s how it turned out to be a career. In addition, being a bus driver was a good opportunity for her and her family. It provides her with good benefits and insurance. She work between 12 to 13 hours a day and five to six days a week. She doesn’t have a specific work place schedule. She drives all different routes and all over the place. She likes the challenges of being a bus driver, and as she mentioned, sometimes she has a good day and sometimes she has a bad day. She deals with so many different types of people and different types of culture, and nationality. Furthermore, she’s always dealing with teenagers, drunk people, drugs addicts and prostitutes. Some people are nice, and others not really but she gets used to it. As she mention, anyone can get use to anything. However, there some days it’s get really hard for her. For example, if she have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the route, dealing with passengers and constantly getting abused by people.
I was very surprised by some of the challenges bus drivers face while driving. First most of them drive all different routes and all over the place. Second they work long hours, and at the end of line they might get only two minutes just enough time to use the bathroom. Third they deal with their personal life and passengers. Even though this job seem to be difficult for women, but she is likes the challenges of being a bus driver.
